My fitness journey in 2018 + 2019 fitness goals

Happy almost new year!

I’ve been doing some reflecting on what changes I made in 2018 & the one that stands out to me the most is living a healthier lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong, I still indulge…a lot, but I have committed to a consistent workout routine, which has always been a struggle for me.

At the beginning of 2018 I decided I wanted to get my fitness in order & I’ve made a little list below of the steps I went through to make that happen!

1.So, my first step for getting into a fitness routine was to find a gym.

I found a gym super close to my house & relatively cheap, so I wouldn’t have any excuses. I was great at coming up with reasons not to go to the gym in the past & the gym being too far away was one I used frequently! So, I found a gym that’s less than 5 minutes away from my house.

2. The second step for me was to commit to a certain number of workouts a week.

I started with at least 3x per week. I felt like that was a super attainable goal for me & that I could probably do more, but I wanted to eliminate as many excuses for myself as possible. I know myself & if I set my goal for 4-5 per week right off the bat, I would have missed days & eventually given up. Once I got used to 3x per week, I moved my way up to where I’m at 5x per week now (barring special circumstances). I usually get those done during the week, that way I don’t have to feel like I need to workout on the weekend. Maybe one day I’ll get to 6x, but I feel like 5x per week is plenty!

3. The third step for me, and this might sound silly, was buying new workout gear.

As you all know, I love shopping, so buying myself new workout clothes really pumped me up! I was excited to go to the gym & wear my new outfits! For some people it might be buying supplements or new athletic shoes, but finding something that will excite you to get to the gym is key.

4. The fourth step I took was to make some workout plans.

I get super intimidated when working out in a gym. This usually surprises people because I’m a gymnastics coach, but as a gymnast you condition using your body weight, so I never knew how to work all of the machines. So, I looked up some workouts on YouTube & mixed them with things I already knew & made a plan before I went to the gym. That was important for me, otherwise I would just do a little bit & then leave. Making a plan & sticking to it made a huge difference.

5. The fifth & final step for me was simply sticking to it.

Now, I know this is the hardest part, but it’s obviously the most important. Getting into a fitness routine is all about a mindset. You can always make excuses & give yourself reasons not to go to the gym, but once you get into that consistent routine, it just feels like a normal part of your day. For me, it’s become as routine as my morning cup of coffee. I don’t even think, “Do I want to go to the gym?”, it’s simply a part of my day now. Obviously I have days when I don’t feel like going, but I make myself & I’ve never regretted it. Every time I’ve skipped my workout, I regret it. So, when you don’t feel like going, try to think a little more long term & decided which decision will make you feel better at the end of the day!

An added bonus step that I would through in there is doing fitness challenges or running races! I did a few of these throughout the year & it just gave me something to work towards when I hit the gym. It definitely helped me stay motivated!

Here are a few pictures from my progress throughout the year! The first picture was taken January 2018 & the last one was taken November 2018.

I learned a lot about myself throughout this 2018 fitness journey! I never thought I could be a runner, but I ran an 8k. I never thought I would actually enjoy working out, but now I look forward to unplugging from my phone & responsibilities to put in the work at the gym. Don’t get stuck thinking you’ll never enjoy working out! You’ll never regret trying!

Here are just a few of my 2019 fitness goals:

  1. Do at least 3 races
  2. Run a 10k
  3. Make 6 feet up the rope without using my legs

  1. You look great, gf! I’d definitely like to kick my fitness routine into high gear, mostly just to feel healthier (although I wouldn’t mind a bit more tone along the way 😉). I bet you’ll crush your goals this year!
